Mural Hunt of the Twin Cities

Posted on September 19, 2018 by Security Bank & Trust Co.

The Twin Cities has some of the best artist in the world, so it's only natural that we try to cover our streets with beautiful murals. Take a peak at some of our favorite ones listed below and give them a visit if you have the chance!

Downtown

The times they are a-changin', located at 5th and Hennepin, By muralist Eduardo Kobra

Designed to turn Minneapolis in to a 24 hour city and to allow art to further influence the area, Goldman's Sachs budgeted $50,000 for this beautiful Bob Dylan mural to be painted. The extremely talented Eduardo Kobra was hired on to complete the project, along with his team of five artists. They can be found creating this vibrant mural style from Anne Frank in Amsterdam to a Star Wars' Yoda in Miami to Michelangelo in the Italian ruins. His portfolio continues to stretch across three continents, and is only continuing to grow. Since 2015 this mural has stood as an iconic art piece in Minneapolis, displaying an individual who has always been important to the Twin cities communities.

Schmitt Music mural, located at 10th and Marquette

One of the oldest murals in Minneapolis, was established during the seventies by the Schmitt Music Company. The chosen music piece was picked from sheet music inside the store, which a company employee choose based upon being the most graphically pleasing to look at. The Schmitt company has moved since, but the mural still remains the same.

First Avenue Star Wall, located at First Avenue Venue of 701 N 1st Ave

With over 500 stars of visited musicians, the hub of Minneapolis' music scene is definitely a mural worth checking out. First Avenue was one of Prince's favorite performance venues in the Twin cities and continues to be a landmark in honoring him. The stars were once painted over in 2010 to make room for future artists and to also give a refreshing look to the wall. To find an entire list of the stars who made the cut to stay as well as new ones added since, you can find them here.

Northeast

I Like You, located at the I Like You Store of 501 1st Ave NE

Do you have someone you like a lot? Perhaps a friend or a significant other? Or maybe you just want a photo of you with the "I like you" message, if so, stop by the mural located in the Northeast neighborhood. It's a great opportunity to appreciate a beautiful mural as well as local Minnesota makers by popping in to the store afterwards. The store's goal is to feature independent crafters and artists who are in a need of a spot to sell their work. You'll find over 200 artists inside with many unique, vibrant, and Minnesotan inspired pieces!

MinneapolisGreetings_NorthEast-135903-editedGreetings from Minneapolis, located at the Key North Boutique of 515 1st Ave NE

Positioned alongside a local Boutique in Northeast, minutes before reaching downtown Minneapolis, this mural welcomes visitors into the city. If you're looking to snap a quick picture, there's parking available in the boutiques lot or nearby on the street. Make sure you stop in the shop afterwards to check out the fair trade products and local designers they have available! Muralist artist is unknown.

Uptown

Rainbow Mural, located at the Rainbow Building of 1422 W Lake St

Right in the heart of Uptown, you'll discover this colorful and bold mural. Providing as a beautiful backdrop, this makes for a very popular photo destination. Like most murals in Uptown, this was conducted by the Ackerberg group. Muralist artist is unknown.

Minnesota Nice, located at Sencha Tea wall of 2601 Hennepin

Featured alongside the Sencha Tea Store as you make your way to Uptown, you'll discover an arrangement of murals. The current mural features a Minnesota Nice loon, this spot is consistently changing what mural is represented here though. Previously, Prince was featured in this location as well as a polar bear mural. Muralist artist is unknown.

Pirates_Uptown-715186-editedPirates Ship, Located at the Subway of 2752 Lyndale Ave S

Another spot near Uptown, hosts an assortment of murals. Once a capture of balloons with limited colors, is know a dark pirate ship. You'll find this mural spot located in a Subway restaurant parking lot, across the street from Milk Jam Creamery and Proper Boutique. Muralist artist is unknown.

Moving over to St. Paul, you'll discover some great murals. Home to the Como Zoo & Conservatory, brings an animal themed mural. Find some of your favorites painted on the brick walls of Classic Retro at Pete's.

Astro_SaintPaulBlaster, Located at the Snelling Cafe of 638 Snelling Ave

Not too far away, is another family-friendly mural. Centered around outer space, this mural will have any astronomer in awe from the combination of galaxies and milky ways. If I say so myself, this mural is pretty out of this world.

Minnesota man, located at 1580 St Clair Ave

Chanhassen

Prince_Chanhassen-917046-editedPrince mural, located at the Chanhassen Cinema of 570 Market Street

Focusing on Minnesota based murals insures that this local legend needs to be included. Located close to Prince's roots, this purple creation is placed alongside the Chanhassen Cinema. There's plenty of space here to snap a picture of it or also to step in the photo as well.

We love having such a great art scene here in the Twin Cities. There's always new murals and art pieces to discover! Follow us along with our Instagram as we post new found pieces.
