The Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for bank employees, customers, and assets in accordance with the Bank Protection Act and applicable regulations. The Security Officer develops and administers the bank’s security program, with oversight of the bank’s physical assets including appropriate internal controls of cash/valuables. This role supports physical security, incident prevention and response, robbery/burglary preparedness, emergency response, vendor management for security systems, and on-going compliance with board-approved security policies.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain, and carry out the bank’s written policies, procedures, and guidelines necessary to support the bank’s written security program.
- Ensure adherence to board-approved security policies and relevant regulatory guidance; coordinate with Audit/Exam teams in preparation of requested materials.
- Ensures that all follow-up items from examinations and audits are completed in a timely manner. The Security Officer is also responsible for ensuring that corrective actions were effective in preventing future instances of non-compliance, program violations, or mitigating the identified risk.
- Prepare and deliver the Annual Bank Security Report to the Board; recommend improvements and track remediation.
- Plan and deliver annual security training (robbery/burglary response, device awareness, opening/closing, visitor control); coordinate periodic drills and equipment tests.
- Provide advice and guidance to Bank staff regarding physical security by addressing any questions in a timely manner. Ensures responses are clear, consistent, and detailed.
- Collaborate with all bank departments to ensure security requirements are embedded in day-to-day processes (e.g., cash handling, dual control, sensitive-area access) and implemented controls are effective and appropriate.
- Oversee access control (keys, combinations, codes, credentials), opening/closing procedures, and visitor management, and restricted area authorization.
- Administer security alarm systems, camera/DVR, fire suppression equipment, and other security devices; ensure functionality, logging, vendor performance, and timely remediation of any defects.
- Conduct inspections and audits of branches, vaults, teller drawers, ATMs, parking areas, and other controlled spaces to identify vulnerabilities and any unsafe conditions.
- Coordinate with Information Security Officer and IT on camera/door controllers, alerting, and overlap between physical and logical controls (e.g., SOC alerts that implicate physical access). Maintain clear delineation between the physical security program and the information security program.
- Manage vendor relationships for security devices and monitoring services; maintain maintenance/testing logs. Contribution to evaluation of new products/services; gathering quotes/proposals as needed.
- Serve as primary liaison to law enforcement and security vendors during events; maintaining accurate logs and records of physical security incidents and events.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience in bank security, fraud/operational risk, BSA/AML or other related roles in a financial institution.
- Ability to effectively communicate with staff, law enforcement, vendors, and regulators in written and verbal communications.
- Ability to handle difficult or tense situations with diplomacy and tact.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with cross-departmental teams.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong technical skills; comfortable using security software & monitoring systems.
- Ability to travel between branch locations as needed.
